Conversions Team Meeting, 23-26 August 2017, in Montreal

Now accepting submissions for a ‘keywords’ session and works-in-progress presentation. See details below.

The Early Modern Conversions project is very pleased to announce our fourth team meeting, which will take place in Montreal from August 23 to 26, 2017.

Kent Monkman - Triumph of MischiefThe first day of the meeting will be devoted to the questions of periodicity and historiography, which have been central to the work since the meeting of the team in Cambridge. Other features of the meeting include a session with the paintings of the great First Nations artist and conversion master , which will be hosted by the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, and also a session on Change, Time, and Visual Culture, another on Conversion Keywords, and much else.

Conversions project members may apply to the Collaboration Fund for travel support. See here for details.

We want your Conversion Keyword

As just mentioned, one special session at the team meeting will be on Conversion Keywords. Your keyword and the session itself will be the first steps toward a “Conversion Keywords” volume—one of the first publications in the Conversions series from Edinburgh UP.

Following on the example of Raymond Williams’ Keywords: A Vocabulary of Culture and Society, the Conversion Keywords volume will provide historical, linguistic, and theoretical definitions for and analytic discussions of the vocabulary of the different forms of transformation (material, economic, religious, social, political, spatial, sexual, human-animal, and linguistic), primarily in early modernity, but also with attention paid to the lexicons of conversion over the long term. The volume could, for example, include a keyword such as “transsexual” that belongs to the 20th and 21st centuries but has deep connections with much older conversional modes of thinking, vocabularies, practices, and canons.

Conversion Keywords will be the work of many hands. The volume will gather the interests, archives, and disciplinary languages of the team members in an accessible and usable form that will both bring forward the differences among the members of the project and also enable those differences to speak to each other.

Your keyword will be distributed to the members of the project in advance of the August team meeting. All the keywords we gather will be at the centre of a special Keywords session at the team meeting.

To join the conversation and to contribute to the volume, please send us your keyword along with a brief analytic definition (no more than 300 words) by June 1, 2017.

And we want your work-in-progress

As always, we will make space for short presentations on work-in-progress (typically 15-20 minutes long). Proposals for the work-in-progress sessions should be approximately 250 words and should provide a brief explanation of how the proposed presentation relates to the research goals of the Conversions project. Please submit your proposal to conversion.iplai@mcgill.ca by June 1, 2017.
