Justin E. H. Smith is university professor of the history and philosophy of science at the University of Paris VII-Denis Diderot. He works principally on the history of natural philosophy from the 16th to the 18th century. He is the author of Divine Machines: Leibniz and the Sciences of Life (Princeton University Press, 2011), and Nature, Human Nature, and Human Difference: Early Modern Philosophy and the Concept of Race (Princeton University Press, forthcoming), as well as numerous articles and chapters in edited volumes. He received a PhD in philosophy from Columbia University in 2000.
