Melanie Simoes Santos is an MA candidate in English at McGill University working under the supervision of Professor Jamie Fumo. Her current project examines the relationship in Middle English mystical works between the reading process and the transcendent experience of the divine. Analyzing reading as performance, her research traces the affective framework that links author, reader, and God. Moving forward, her next project will set the affective strategies of medieval devotional literature in dialogue with theatrical production in early modern England, focusing on the relationship between performance and cognition in the practice and representation of devotion.
