Madiha Hannachi is a Ph. D. candidate of English at Université de Montréal, QC, Canada. Her dissertation is titled Shakespeare Through Contemporary Arab Eyes: History, Revolution, and Transcultural Adaptation. It examines the cultural modes through which Shakespeare is seen and interpreted in contemporary tumultuous and ever-shifting Arab paradigms. It suggests a new reading of transcultural adaptation as a form of conversion whereby history, language, religion, and cultural codes and props ought to be revisited, converted, and embraced within the target culture. It also portrays the contemporary Arab world from a theatrical perspective where notions such as history, nation, and revolution are being questioned and staged through Shakespearean lenses.
Hannachi presented her work in Europe, Australia and North America. Her research interests include translation, transcultural adaptation, contemporary Shakespeare, and Arab theatre.
Her work in progress include an article titled “Towards a Genealogy of Adaptation: Arab Adaptation of Shakespeare as Historical Conversion”, and a book chapter titled “Conversion as Business in Sulayman Al-Bassam’s The Al-Hamlet Summit”.
